Brand Designer in Nashville: What to Look For When Hiring

By Chloe Leonard, Founder of CL Studio

Nashville is full of creative talent. From musicians to singers, to interior designers and fine artists, that is part of what makes this city so energizing to build a business in. But when you are Nashville business ready to hire a brand designer in a city of so many options, having a lot of options can actually make the decision harder. Knowing what to look for before you start reviewing portfolios will save you time, money, and a lot of second-guessing.

At CL Studio, we work with small businesses across Nashville and beyond. We have seen what happens when business owners hire quickly, and what happens when they hire thoughtfully. The difference is almost always evident in one thing: the outcome.

Before you start vetting designers, it helps to understand what a strong Nashville brand actually needs to do — we cover that in full here.

Look at Process, Not Just Portfolio

A strong portfolio tells you what a designer has done and their process (ours is on our home and services page) tells you whether they will be able to do it for you. Before signing anything, ask how they approach each project. Do they take time to understand your business, your clients, and your goals? Or do they move quickly on a fast track into visual concepts?

The best brand work is built on a foundation of real understanding your unique Nashville business. If a designer cannot explain how they learn about a client's business before designing for it, that is worth paying attention to. Because at the end of the day, beautiful work that does not connect to business strategy is just decoration.

Alignment Matters More Than Style (But Style Is Still Important)

You might love a designer's aesthetic and still end up with a brand that does not feel like you. That is because style is a surface quality, while alignment runs deeper. You want to work with someone who can translate your values, your personality, and your vision into something visual, not someone who imposes their own preferences onto your brand.

When you review portfolios, look for range and adaptability. Or when you look at their social media, browse their content for peaks at their values and point of view. A strong brand designer can work across different industries and client personalities because they are designing for the client knowing their unique strong suites, not for themselves.

Communication and Clarity Are Non-Negotiable

As you might assume, a branding or web design project involves a lot of back and forth. You will share feedback, ask questions, and navigate decisions together (hot tip: a good designer makes it feel super streamlined and easy to figure out). The quality of that collaboration depends almost entirely on how well your designer communicates.

Pay attention to how quickly they respond during your initial conversations. Notice whether they explain their thinking clearly or leave you guessing. A designer who communicates well during the sales process will almost certainly communicate well during the project itself. One who is slow to respond or vague in their answers before you hire them is unlikely to improve once the contract is signed.
