7 Website Design Tips for Small Business Owners That Want to Convert
By Chloe Leonard, Web Designer and Founder of CL Studio
Your website should not just exist. It should work for you and your brand. In fact, you might as well call it one of your hardest working employees.
As a creative agency for small businesses that works with Squarespace, ShowIt, and Shopify, we know that a website is the first real interaction someone has with your brand. In a matter of seconds, your audience decides whether they want to stay, explore, or move on to the next business.
Conversion is rarely about flashy design or trends, although a good looking site is important especially if you’re in a field that values design and aesthetic. In addition, if your branding is centered around looking a certain way, your website should match that level of design - more on that later. At the end of the day, your website is about communication, trust, and action.
At CL Studio, we see the same patterns again and again, and the websites that convert the best are not complicated, they’re deliberate.
Here are seven foundational website design tips to help your site do more than look good and work harder, so you don’t have to.
1. Lead with Precision
When someone lands on your homepage, they should immediately understand what you do, who you help, and why it matters.
If visitors have to scroll or hunt for context or to take the next step to work with you, you have already lost momentum. And more importantly, an opportunity for a potential client or customer to work with you. Your website shouldn’t be a puzzle to figure out, as fun and as cool as that sounds if designed well.
Simple, personal, direct messaging paired with intentional design above all else sets the tone for everything that follows.

2. Every Page Should Have One Goal
When you design one clear action per page, whether it is booking a call, joining your email list, or purchasing a product, guide users toward that action with confidence through simplifying.
Too many choices create hesitation. Clear calls to action create movement.
Bonus Tip: This is also super helpful for SEO! When Google scans a page for information, it wants to know exactly what the subject of that page is. In other words, it needs to be CLEAR. For example, for my client National Hair Loss Medical Aesthetics, we have a Hair Services Page and a Skin Services Page. We don’t have a page for all of their services because people don’t usually search for hair and skin services together as much as they would separately. Keeping your services, offerings, or products categorized into clear pages creates a pathway for Google and your customers to understand your business and how people can work with you.
3. Make Your Site Easy to Navigate
If your navigation feels cluttered or confusing, people will disengage because they don’t have enough trust or understanding in your brand to move forward.
Having fewer menu items and thoughtful page structure help visitors find what they need without friction or confusion.
Let’s face it, a smooth UX experience builds trust in what the services you offer before a single word is read.
4. Use Visuals with Purpose
Visuals such as photography and design elements, like fonts, colors, and even patterns, should support and elevate your message, not distract from it.
At CL Studio, we value high quality imagery paired with clean layouts that allow brands to feel elevated and intentional without feeling too cluttered.
Especially in this case, white space is not wasted space - it’s breathing room that is necessary to allow content to land with your audience.
5. Connect Human to Human
It’s simple: write like a human.
Your website copy should sound like a real conversation, not a corporate brochure or an AI generated response.
We know this is probably an obvious one, but why is this? When you speak directly to your audience, omitting the unnecessary fluff, the pathway to connection to your desired consumer becomes more clear.
When you consider how exactly you want to come across, connection is a powerful conversion tool. Focus on how you help, how it feels to work with you, and what transformation they can expect (that’s a BIG one for sales).
6. Build Credibility Throughout Your Site
Often overlooked, testimonials, social proof, and clear explanations of your process reassure visitors that they are in the right place. Plus, this is also an SEO win! If you want to tell Google you’re an authority in your space or subjects you’re trying to rank for, having Google business reviews on your website, publication features, and step-by-step processes of what it’s like to work with you is key.
People want to know they are not taking a risk by trusting you, so you need to show them. Support their choice with undeniable evidence.
7. Design for Your Future
Your website design isn’t there to show your audience just where you are now, but more importantly, where you are going.
The reason behind building a website is that it supports growth. So, if your business evolves but your site stays stuck, conversion will suffer. Your website should feel aligned with the level of opportunity you want to attract so build a site best suited for your future self and future clients.
If your website no longer reflects where your business is headed, it may be time for a strategic upgrade.
